FOI 1255-2024/25 Deaths in Custody

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 from the Police. I would like to request all the information you have regarding deaths in police custody from 2013-2025.

I am looking for details including statistics regarding: 

Q1. Deaths in custody.

Q2. Deaths involved in police chases.

Q3. Deaths due to police use of force.

Q4. Deaths from the line of duty. For clarification I am referring to deaths during or following police contact of people not employed by the police. 

Q5. Statistics regarding which of these accidental deaths in police custody were referred to the IOPC for investigation.

Extent and Result of Searches to Locate Information
To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted within North Yorkshire Police.

I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by North Yorkshire Police.  

Decision
I have today decided to disclose the following information to you.

Q1. There have been no deaths in the police custody suite in the specified timeframe.

Q2. There have been no deaths resulting from police chases in the specified timeframe.

Q3. There have been no deaths resulting from police use of force in the specified timeframe.

Q4. There have been 212 deaths during or following police contact in the specified timeframe.

Q5. Not applicable. Please see response to Question 1.
