Cash machine safety
Criminals use sophisticated technology and scams to defraud ATM users. It is important to stay vigilant around cash machines and keep your security details safe.
The Big Book of Little Scams which was created by the Metropolitan Police provides great crime prevention advice when using cash machines.
In January 2011 two members of the public attempted to use a cash machine in Market Place, Bedale. They became suspicious after finding a plastic device covering the card slot and contacted the police. Officers recovered a device covering the front of the machine. Such devices work by fixing a ‘dummy’ card slot over the machine which takes a copy of your bank card. A small camera focused on the key-pad then records your PIN. The thieves are then able to make a replica of your card and have the PIN to go with it.
